Processing the Special Consumption Tax (IEC) implies a set of definitions on the files and items subject to this rate. The IEC value calculation is controlled by the category it is associated to.

Items subject to IEC

To correctly process the IEC rate of an item, it is necessary to perform a few definitions on the item file. For this, follow these steps:

  1. Access [Marketing & Sales / Purchases] | Inventory | Items;
  2. Select the items subject to IEC;
  3. On the tab General, in Options specify that an item is Subject to IEC;
  4. On the tab IEC define the Category. The category selection is defined in [Marketing & Sales / Purchases] | Tax Obligations | Resources | Tables | IEC | Categories;
  5. Define the Alcohol Volume. If on the category IEC the option Value Based on the Volume of Alcohol is active, you must specify the item alcohol quantity (in degrees);
  6. Determine the Tax Unit that matches the unit specified on the IEC category;
  7. Select the Taric Code. This code is defined in [Marketing & Sales / Purchases] | Tax Obligations | Resources | Tables | IEC | Taric Codes;
  8. Select the Packaging, defined in [Marketing & Sales / Purchases] | Tax Obligations | Resources | Tables | IEC | Packages;
  9. Specify the Packaging Capacity defined on the previous option;
  10. The field Unit is related to the tax unit and refers to the way of selling the item. It is also related to the retail unit (Conversion Factor for the Base Unit);
  11. Specify the Conversion Factor for the Base Unit between the Packaging Unit and the item base Unit;
  12. Determine the IEC Value, calculated based on the IEC Category definition and on the Item IEC data;
  13. Finally, click Save.

IEC value calculation

An item's IEC value calculation is controlled by the IEC Category associated. There are 3 variants:

1. The IEC Category is based on the alcoholic volume:

This configuration is used to define the IEC Categories that will be associated to items whose tax is performed according to its Alcohol Volume. In this case, the option Based in Alcohol Volume is selected, and it is necessary to specify the corresponding Measurement Unit concerning the tax value.

To calculate the IEC value of the items associated to this category, the Alcohol Volume, the Quantity and the corresponding Measurement Unit are considered for the item. It is worth noting that a match between the Measurement Unit for the item and the IEC Category must be defined.

Example: Consider a Category called “ Whiskies”, based on the Alcohol Volume, whose tax value is 1001,35€ /hl (hectoliter) and an item associated to this Category, with Alcohol Volume of 40 degrees (40%), and the packaging capacity of 70cl (the Measurement Unit is cl).

IEC calculation:

  1. Alcohol present on the Item: 70cl x 0.40 = 28 cl;
  2. Relationship between the Item Measurement Unit and the IEC Category: cl = 0.0001hl; Note: This relationship is defined on the module Measurement Units;
  3. Item's IEC: 28 x 0.0001 x 10001,35€ = 2,804€

2. The IEC Category by Measurement Unit:

This configuration is used to define IEC Categories that will be associated to items whose tax is performed according to its Quantity (Packaging content). For this situation, only the Tax value and the corresponding Measurement Unit are specified (the option Based in Alcoholic Volume is deactivated).

For the items associated to this Category, the IEC value will be calculated from the Quantity and from the corresponding Measurement Unit defined for the Item (Note: the match between the Item's Measurement Unit and the IEC Category must be defined).

Example: Consider a Category called “Beer Type 2”, whose tax value is 8,65€ /hl (hectoliters) and an item associated to this Category, with a packaging capacity of 5l (liters).

IEC calculation:

  1. Packaging content: 5l;
  2. Relationship between the Item Measurement Unit and the IEC Category: ll = 0.01 hl (NOTE: This relationship is defined on the module Measurement Units);
  3. Item's IEC: 5 x 0.01 x 8,65€ = 0,433€.

3. Fixed value for the IEC Category:

In this option, only a tax value for the Category without reference to any Measurement Unit is specified (the option Based in Alcohol volume is deactivated). When defining a IEC Item in this Category, the IEC value will be the same as the Category (direct copy of the value).

Example: Consider the 1 Category called “V. Porto Bottle 75cl”, whose tax value is 0,437€ and an item associated to this Category.

IEC Category: Item IEC = 0,437€
